PSA to count number of overseas Filipinos
The Philippine Statistics Authority is currently conducting the 2017 Survey on Overseas Filipinos in 26 sample barangays in Aklan.
SOF aims to obtain the national estimates on the number of overseas Filipinos including overseas workers.
According to Provincial Statistics Officer Antonet Catubuan covered in this survey are those family members who travelled outside of the Philippines within the period October 2012 to September 2017.
Data that will be collected in this survey include the demographic and economic characteristics of OFWs and the remittances they send to their families in the Philippines.
Likewise, related information such as the place of destination, length of stay abroad, type of work abroad, date of departure and return are also covered.
According to the latest results of 2016 SOF, the number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who worked abroad at any time during the period April to September 2016 was estimated at 2.2 million, 97.5 percent of which were classified as Overseas Contract Workers (OCWs) or those with existing work contract while the rest (2.5 percent) worked overseas without contract.
Saudi Arabia continued to be the leading destination of OFWs with about one in every four (23.8%) worked in this country during the period April to September 2016.
The other preferred destinations were United Arab Emirates (15.9%), Europe (6.6%), Kuwait (6.4%), and Qatar (6.2%)
The 2017 SOF is a rider survey to the quarterly Labor Force Survey conducted to determine our country’s employment rate.
PSO Catubuan urges respondents to give truthful and correct information to data collectors.
She assured them that all information will be treated with strict confidentiality and cannot be used for taxation, investigation or law enforcement purposes as provided for by law.
