Aklan population reaches 574, 823
The total population of the Province of Aklan reached 574, 823 based on the latest results of the 2015 Census of Population conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority.
Aklan’s population size increased by 39, 098 over its 2010 population count of 535, 725, and by 123, 509 compared with the population of 451, 314 in 2000.
Aklan was the fastest growing province in Western Visayas with an average annual population growth rate of 1.35 percent annually during the period 2010 to 2015.
Of the 17 municipalities, Kalibo, which is the capital town of the province, has the largest population with 80, 605, followed by Malay with 52, 973 and Ibajay with 49, 564. The population of these three towns comprised 31.86 percent of the Aklan population.
This is followed by New Washington (45, 007 persons), Banga (39, 505), Nabas (36, 435), Batan (32, 032), Numancia (31, 934), Balete (28, 920), Libacao (28, 241), and Makato (27, 262).
Municipalities with population below 27, 000 mark are: Altavas (24, 619), Malinao (23, 194), Tangalan (21, 196), Buruanga (19, 003), Madalag (18, 389), and Lezo (15, 224).
On the other hand, out of 327 barangays in Aklan, Manoc-Manoc in Malay was the most populous with 14, 810, followed by Andagaw in Kalibo with 12, 703, Balabag in Malay with 12, 296, Poblacion and Buswang New in Kalibo with 11, 751 and 10, 431 persons, respectively.
The smallest barangays are Capataga in Malinao with 40, Tamokoe in Tangalan with 154, Malindog in Ibajay with 198, Napatag in Tangalan with 224, and Cabugao in Ibajay with 225.
Boracay Island with three barangays---Balabag, Manoc-Manoc and Yapak has the combined population of 32, 627 or 60.91 percent of the total population of Malay.
More than half (51.72 percent) of the combined population are located in the municipalities that belong to the eastern side --- Kalibo, New Washington, Banga, Batan, Altavas, Balete, Libacao, and Madalag with 297, 318 persons, while the remaining 48.28 percent or 277, 505 persons are found in the western side--- Numancia, Makato, Lezo, Malinao, Tangalan, Ibajay, Nabas, Malay, and Buruanga.
In Western Visayas, Aklan ranked fourth among the five provinces in terms of population size. It comprised 12.84 percent of the 4.5 million population in Western Visayas. Among the provinces, Iloilo, excluding Iloilo City, has the largest population with 1.9 million, while Guimaras has the smallest with 174, 613 persons.
The 2015 Census of Population was conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority in August 2015 pursuant to Republic Act No. 10625, also known as the Philippine Statistical Act of 2013 and Executive Order No. 352.
The results were declared official by virtue of the Proclamation No. 1269 signed by President Benigno S. Aquino III on May 18, 2016.
