Aklan BPLOs trained in using standard industry classification
As a pilot province for the adoption of standard industry classification, the Philippine Statistics Authority convened business permit and licensing officers from Aklan in a seminar-workshop held at Grand Xing Imperial Hotel, Iloilo City on May 2-3, 2017.
Seventeen BPLOs from different towns of Aklan attended the 2-day seminar workshop, which aims to equip licensing officer’s knowledge on different standard industry classification systems, determine its uses, and appreciate its importance especially in generating local economic data.
According to Provincial Statistics Officer Antonet B. Catubuan, BPLOs were selected as participants for the workshop because they are directly involved in processing business transactions, which are a rich source of economic data.
“By capacitating BPLOs in using the Philippine Standard Industry Classification (PSIC) system, LGUs could produce statistics for use in local planning which are comparable and attuned with the international standards,” PSO Catubuan explained.

It serves as a framework for data collection, processing and compilation to secure uniformity and comparability of industrial statistics produced by both government and private sectors.
The training-workshop is part of the PSA mandate to develop and maintain appropriate frameworks and standards in the production of data, and promote the adoption of statistical standards to LGUs and other agencies to ensure a harmonize and comparable statistics in the country.
Aside from Aklan, municipal treasurers from Guimaras also joined the activity which covers topics on the use of mobile application for e-Classification system, orientation on PSIC, and online business permit applications.
Present during the workshop are PSA top officials led by Deputy National Statistician Josie Perez, Assistant National Statistician on Standards Service Candido J. Astrologo, and Division Chief of Standard Classification Severa Decosto.
